Finding out you’re pregnant can bring a flood of emotions—surprise, fear, confusion, maybe even hope. No matter what you’re feeling, it’s important to have accurate information about your pregnancy so you can make the best decision for your health and your future. That’s where a limited ultrasound comes in.
What Is a Limited Ultrasound?
A limited ultrasound is a medical scan performed to answer three important questions:
- Is the pregnancy located in the uterus?
- Is there a heartbeat?
- How far along am I?
Unlike a full diagnostic ultrasound that you might get later in pregnancy, a limited ultrasound focuses on confirming the basics of a pregnancy in its early stages. This information is vital—especially if you’re unsure about your next steps.
Why Is It Important?
Even if you have had a positive pregnancy test, there are things a test can’t tell you:
- Statistically, 10-25% of early pregnancies end in miscarriage.
- Some pregnancies implant outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancies), which can be life-threatening.
- Knowing how far along you are matters if you’re considering your options.
Having a limited ultrasound gives you a clearer picture of what’s really happening in your body—so you can move forward with confidence and care.
Is It Safe?
Yes—ultrasounds are completely safe. They use sound waves (not radiation) to create images of what’s happening inside your body. At The SHARE Center, we offer two types of limited ultrasounds, depending on how far along you may be. All ultrasounds start out abdominally to confirm that the fetus is in the uterus. If the nurse is unable to document fetal heart sounds or measurements, she may do a vaginal ultrasound.
- Vaginal Ultrasound: In early pregnancy (usually under 7 weeks), a vaginal ultrasound provides the clearest image. A small, thin probe is gently inserted into the vaginal canal. It might sound intimidating, but most women report only mild discomfort, if any. The procedure is done in a private setting, and our female medical staff walks you through every step with care and respect.
- External (Abdominal) Ultrasound: As pregnancy progresses, an external ultrasound may be used. This is the type most people are familiar with—a small device is moved across your belly using a special gel to capture images of the baby. It’s completely non-invasive and pain-free.
Whichever type is used, your comfort and privacy are our top priorities. Our goal is to give you the clearest information about your pregnancy in the most compassionate way possible.
